NPC movement

Premium

This is part of ScriptedEssentials Premium. See what's in each edition.

Open an NPC's editor and use the Movement row to choose what it does. Use wander for background movement, a path for a route, or a recording when you want to act it out yourself.

Mode What it does
IDLE Stands still
WANDER Walks around inside a radius
PATH Walks between points you place
RECORDED Replays movement you recorded yourself

The current mode is in the top-right of the GUI. Click it to stop and go back to idle.

Wander

Click Wander and type a radius in chat. The NPC wanders around the position where you're standing when you set it.

For every NPC at once:

commands
/npc wanderall <radius> [near]

The second number limits it to NPCs within that many blocks of you. Leave it off and it's everyone.

Before recording

Wanderers choose their own route and pauses. They can turn, jump and react to nearby players, so two takes won't necessarily look the same.

Try the movement on the actual set first. If an NPC won't cross part of the terrain, check its surface settings and give it a clearer route. Use a path or recorded movement when you need more control.

Styles (/npc wanderstyle)

commands
/npc wanderstyle <normal|gossip|lazy> [near]
Style What it looks like
normal Walks about, the odd sprint, short pauses
gossip Sticks near other NPCs, short hops, long stands facing each other. Put a few in a square
lazy No sprinting, longer pauses, shorter walks

Keeping to a surface (/npc wandersurface)

commands
/npc wandersurface here [near] # the block you're standing on
/npc wandersurface add <block> [near]
/npc wandersurface clear [near]

Wanderers only pick spots standing on those blocks. Stand on your path block and run here and they'll keep to the paving. If they're already off it they're allowed one step to get back on.

Use this to keep a crowd on a path or a particular floor material. Make sure the allowed blocks form a usable route, then test it before recording.

Style and surface are saved per NPC.

Paths

Click Path in the edit GUI. Your hotbar gets swapped for:

  • Add Point - right-click a block to drop a waypoint
  • Remove Last - undo the last one
  • Finish Path - save it and start walking
  • Cancel - back out

Your hotbar comes back either way. Points show as particles while you place them.

For a lot of NPCs walking one route in formation, use an army instead.

Recorded movement

Click Record, then Start Recording. Walk the route yourself, then use Stop & Apply. The NPC plays back the recorded movement and where you were looking. Watch a full playback before filming to check it works on the set.

Syncing several NPCs

commands
/npc syncrec [group]

Restarts recorded playback on every NPC at the same instant, or just the ones in a group. For when a dozen of them need to move together for a shot.

/npc syncrecording and /npc syncrecorded do the same.

End behaviour

What a path or recording does when it gets to the end:

Value What happens
REVERSE Walks it backwards
TELEPORT Jumps back to the start
STOP Stays put

Click End Behavior in the GUI to cycle it. There's a default for new NPCs in Defaults.
