FAQ & Troubleshooting
Start with the message in chat or the server console. The sections below cover common problems and what to check before changing files or resetting anything.
The plugin didn't start
The console prints the reason.
| Console says | Fix |
|---|---|
NickAPI detected! |
Remove NickAPI. See Integrations |
CRITICAL ERROR DURING PLUGIN ENABLE |
Read the first error and its cause below it; the heading alone doesn't identify the problem |
| No enable message | Check the full startup log, plugin jar location and the requirements on Installation |
A command doesn't exist
Three things turn a command off:
- Its system is off in
config.yml, likekit.enabled: false - The feature is off in
/sefeatures - You don't have permission, so you never see it
Check /sefeatures first, it's the one people forget.
A command exists but says no permission
Check the feature in /seperm and the command's own permission requirements. Some commands, including /npc, require admin access even if a similarly named feature node is granted. See Permissions.
The menus are chests or chat, not dialogs
Kits and warps use Paper's dialog API for their management screens. The fallback is chosen by whether that API is available on the server, not by checking every player's client version. If clients connect through a compatibility plugin, test the menus with those clients too.
config.yml changes aren't doing anything
/se reloadIf it still looks wrong, check you edited plugins/ScriptedEssentials/config.yml and not a copy.
/ondeath saves its mode to death.on-death-mode, so set that one in game rather than in the file. Things like /pvp, /chatmute, /recsession and /railspeed aren't in config.yml at all. They're saved in server/system.json, so just use the command. Orbital strike settings are in presets/orbital.yml.
An NPC is invisible
| What's happening | Fix |
|---|---|
| Invisible to one player | /npc reload <name> |
| Invisible to everyone | Check its world and hidden state; try /npc show <name> if it should be visible |
| Wrong armour or skin | /npc reload <name> |
| Not sure what exists | /se npcdiag |
NPCs disappeared after a restart
If they're in a world loaded by Multiverse or similar they get held back until that world loads. Give it a moment.
Still missing, check that npcs/npcs.json contains them, that the right world is loaded, and whether they were hidden.
An NPC won't die
Immortal and Hittable in the edit GUI. Protected NPCs take no damage. Immortal ones take it but survive.
A wandering NPC won't go somewhere
Check the NPC's movement mode, wander radius and any allowed surface blocks. Give it a clear route and test it on the actual set. A wanderer chooses its own movement; use a path or recording when it needs to go somewhere specific.
If it still looks stuck, try /npc reload <name> and check /se npcdiag. Reloading won't fix a blocked route or a surface rule that excludes the destination.
A player is stuck frozen
/unfreeze <player>Frozen state survives restarts on purpose.
Chat is eating my messages
A prompt was left open, a rename, a category rename, a preset name. Your next chat line gets read as the answer. Type cancel. Logging out and in clears it too.
Some menus still use chat for names or other input, so check which editor you last opened.
Someone lost their inventory
/inventoryrollback <player>Choose an existing snapshot from the menu. This can recover an earlier inventory after auto clear, but only if a suitable snapshot was saved. Auto clear doesn't create a backup before each sweep.
I blew up the build with an orbital strike
/chunkrestore r:10 t:5mThis only works for changes already in the log. It also removes non-player entities in the affected chunks, so read Chunk tools before running it. A named save or world backup may be the better recovery option.
To stop it happening again:
orbital:
disabled: trueSkins aren't loading
Skins come from Mojang and cache in cache/skin_cache.json. Give the lookup time to finish. If skins keep failing, check the name, console errors and network access; failed lookups or rate limits can also be involved. Don't delete the cache as the first troubleshooting step.
Can I use /reload?
No
Use /se reload for supported configuration and data reloads. Use a full server restart when changing plugin jars. A general server reload can leave plugin state, listeners or tasks inconsistent, so don't use it as an update method.
Does this work on Spigot?
No. Paper, or something built on it like Purpur.
Where's my data?
plugins/ScriptedEssentials/
config.yml settings
kits/ one .yml per kit, categories as folders
warps/ warps.json
npcs/ NPCs, groups, queues and armies
players/ player data and teams
nicks/ nickname profiles, the name pool and the skin cache
settings/ feature permissions, blocked names, command blocker, blocked mods
server/ toggles like /pvp and /chatmute, recording borders
presets/ random fill, orbital and potion presets
replay/ PlayerReplay recordings (Premium)
database/ block changes for chunk restore
backups/ kits, warps, inventories, chunks
logs/Back the folder up before a big version jump.
Moving to another server
Stop both, copy plugins/ScriptedEssentials/ over, start the new one. Warps and NPCs go by world name, so the worlds need the same names both sides.
Whitelisting someone who's never joined
/serverlock whitelist add <player> takes names that have never connected.
Everything's disabled and I can't turn it back on
The /sefeatures toggles are in settings/feature-permissions.yml under disabled-features. Stop the server, empty the list, start it.
disabled-features: []Something got deleted that I needed
| What | Where |
|---|---|
| A player's items | /inventoryrollback <player> |
| Blocks | An existing /chunksave save, world backup, or recorded /chunkrestore history |
| A kit or warp | Check existing copies in backups/kits/ and backups/warps/ |
| An item left in the trim maker | It drops where you logged out |
